**🏛️ Start at the Green** Begin your visit at the New Haven Green, the 16-acre historic park at the center of downtown. It's a great spot to people-watch and get your bearings, with three churches dating back to the 1810s. The Green is also a hub for events like the annual Arts & Ideas festival in June. Free Wi-Fi is available, and it's a short walk from the Union Station shuttle stop. **🎓 Explore Yale's Campus** Yale University offers free student-led tours from the Visitor Center at 149 Elm Street, typically at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekdays. Don't miss the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, which houses a Gutenberg Bible and is open to the public daily. The Yale University Art Gallery at 1111 Chapel Street is also free and worth a couple of hours. **🍕 Taste the Apizza** New Haven is famous for its coal-fired apizza, and you can't leave without trying it. Head to Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana at 157 Wooster Street, open since 1925, or Sally's Apizza next door. Expect a wait on weekends, but the white clam pie is a local legend. A large cheese pie costs around $20. **🖼️ Visit the Museums** The Yale Peabody Museum reopened in 2024 after a major renovation and features dinosaur fossils and a new outdoor courtyard. Admission is free for all Connecticut residents and $15 for adults otherwise. The Connecticut Children's Museum at 22 Wall Street is great for families, with hands-on exhibits for kids under 10. **🌳 Stroll East Rock Park** For sweeping views of the city and Long Island Sound, hike or drive up East Rock Park. The summit is accessible by car via Farnam Drive, or you can take the 20-minute trail from the base. It's especially beautiful in autumn when the leaves change. Bring a picnic and enjoy the sunset from the overlook. **🛍️ Shop on Chapel Street** Chapel Street is the main shopping drag, with a mix of national brands and local boutiques. Stop by the Yale Bookstore at 77 Broadway for Yale gear, or browse the shops at The Shops at Yale. For something unique, check out Idiom, a boutique at 1010 Chapel Street featuring independent designers. Most stores open at 10 a.m. and close around 7 p.m. **🍽️ Dine in Wooster Square** Wooster Square is the heart of New Haven's Italian-American community and home to several top restaurants. Beyond the famous pizzerias, try Libby's Italian Pastry Shop at 139 Wooster Street for cannoli and Italian ice. In April, the square hosts the Cherry Blossom Festival with food vendors and live music. It's a short walk from downtown. **🚆 Getting Around** New Haven is easily walkable, but for longer trips, use the CTtransit buses or the Yale Shuttle, which is free and open to the public. A single bus fare is $1.75, and a day pass costs $3.50. If you're arriving by train, Union Station is about a mile from the Green, with a free shuttle. Taxis and rideshares are also readily available.
