**🏯 Explore Ancient Temples** Chiang Mai's Old City is packed with temples, but don't miss Wat Phra Singh on Ratchadamnoen Road, open daily from 6 AM to 6 PM with a 100 THB entry fee for foreigners. For a quieter experience, visit Wat Chiang Man, the city's oldest temple, on Ratchaphakhinai Road, where locals often pray in the early morning. Insider tip: Many temples close their main halls between noon and 1 PM for cleaning, so plan around that. **🐘 Ethical Elephant Sanctuaries** Skip the elephant riding camps and head to Elephant Nature Park in Mae Taeng, about an hour north of the city, where you can feed and bathe rescued elephants for around 2,500 THB for a half-day visit. Book at least a week in advance, especially in high season from November to February. Another good option is Elephant Rescue Park, which offers smaller group sizes and focuses on observation rather than interaction. **🍜 Street Food Adventures** The Sunday Walking Street on Ratchadamnoen Road from 4 PM to midnight is a must for sampling northern Thai specialties like sai ua (spicy sausage) and khao soi for under 60 THB. For a more local scene, head to Chang Phuak Gate Night Market, open daily from 6 PM, where you'll find the famous cowboy hat lady selling khao kha moo (stewed pork leg) for 50 THB. Don't forget to try mango sticky rice from a vendor near the Old City moat, usually 40 to 60 THB per serving. **🌿 Nature Escapes Nearby** Doi Inthanon National Park, about two hours from Chiang Mai, offers waterfalls, hiking trails, and Thailand's highest peak; entry is 300 THB for adults. For a closer escape, take a songthaew to Doi Suthep-Pui National Park and hike the Monk's Trail from Wat Pha Lat to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a 5 km trek that takes around two hours. Bring water and wear sturdy shoes, as the trail can be slippery after rain. **🎨 Creative Workshops** Chiang Mai is a hub for crafts, so consider a half-day Thai cooking class at Pantawan Cooking School near the Night Bazaar, which costs around 1,200 THB and includes a market tour. For something different, try a traditional umbrella painting workshop at Bo Sang Handicraft Center, about 9 km east of the city, open daily from 8 AM to 5 PM. Many hostels and cafes also offer short courses in batik, pottery, or even Muay Thai. **🛌 Where to Stay** The Old City is ideal for first-timers, with guesthouses like Tha Phae Gate area offering rooms from 500 THB per night. Nimmanhaemin Road is popular with digital nomads and has trendy cafes and co-working spaces, while the Riverside area along the Ping River offers quieter boutique hotels. Book ahead for the Yi Peng Festival in November, when prices double and rooms fill up months in advance. **🚌 Getting Around Town** Chiang Mai has no metro, but red songthaews (shared trucks) are the main public transport; fares within the Old City are 30 THB, and you can flag one down almost anywhere. For more flexibility, rent a scooter for 200 to 300 THB per day, but only if you're an experienced rider and have an international driver's license. Apps like Grab and Bolt are also available and often cheaper for short trips, especially during peak hours. **🌙 Evening Entertainment** The Night Bazaar on Chang Klan Road is open daily from 6 PM to midnight and offers everything from handicrafts to live music. For a local vibe, check out the North Gate Jazz Co-op on Sri Phum Road, which has live jazz nightly from 8 PM with no cover charge. If you're into Muay Thai, Thapae Boxing Stadium hosts fights every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 8 PM, with tickets starting at 400 THB.
