**🏔️ Hike the Taka Mountains** The Taka Mountains are Kassala's defining feature, and hiking to the summit of Jabal Taka offers panoramic views of the town and the surrounding plains. The trail starts near the western edge of town, and it's a steady 1.5 to 2 hour climb; go early in the morning to avoid the heat. Bring water and wear sturdy shoes, as the path is rocky. Local guides are available at the trailhead for around 2,000 SDG if you want historical context. **🍵 Sip Tea at the Souq** Kassala's main souq is a vibrant maze of stalls selling everything from spices to colorful textiles. The tea ladies, known as 'sit al-shai', set up in the late afternoon and serve sweet, spiced tea for about 500 SDG. It's the perfect spot to people-watch and soak up the atmosphere. The souq is busiest on Fridays and Saturdays, so plan accordingly. **🏛️ Explore the Khatmiyya Mosque** The Khatmiyya Mosque is one of Kassala's most important religious sites, located near the center of town. Non-Muslims are generally not allowed inside, but the exterior architecture and the surrounding square are worth a visit. The best time to pass by is during the evening prayer when the area comes alive with worshippers. Remember to dress modestly and respect local customs. **🌳 Relax in the Public Gardens** Kassala's public gardens, particularly the one near the Taka Mountains, offer a cool retreat from the midday sun. The gardens are free to enter and open from sunrise to sunset. You'll find families picnicking and children playing, especially on weekends. It's a great place to enjoy a packed lunch or read a book under the shade of acacia trees. **🛍️ Shop for Local Crafts** Kassala is known for its colorful woven baskets and pottery, which make great souvenirs. Head to the women's cooperative near the souq, where you can buy directly from artisans. Prices range from 1,000 to 5,000 SDG depending on the item. The cooperative is open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, except during Friday prayers. **🍽️ Taste Sudanese Cuisine** No visit to Kassala is complete without trying the local food. Head to one of the small restaurants near the bus station for a plate of ful medames or tamiya, a Sudanese falafel. A hearty meal costs around 1,500 to 3,000 SDG. For a special treat, try the grilled Nile perch at the fish market near the Gash River. **🚌 Getting Around Kassala** Kassala is a walkable town, but you can also take a rickshaw (tuk-tuk) for short trips. A ride within the center costs about 500 to 1,000 SDG. Shared taxis are available for longer distances, such as to the Taka Mountains. The main bus station connects Kassala to Khartoum and other major cities. **🌅 Watch Sunset by the Gash River** The Gash River, which flows through Kassala, is a popular spot for evening walks. As the sun sets, the riverbank comes alive with vendors selling snacks and drinks. It's a peaceful way to end the day. The area is generally safe, but it's best to go with a local or in a group after dark.
