**🏛️ Origin of the City's Name** Yekaterinburg was founded in 1723 by Peter the Great and named after his wife, Catherine I (Yekaterina in Russian). The name combines 'Yekaterina' with the German suffix '-burg' (meaning 'fortress' or 'castle'), reflecting the city's origins as an industrial fortress. The current spelling 'Yekaterinburg' settled in the 18th century, though during the Soviet era (1924-1991) it was renamed Sverdlovsk. In 1991, the original name was restored, and today it's often shortened to 'Yekat' in casual speech. **🗣️ Yekat: The Local Short Form** Locals commonly call their city 'Yekat' (pronounced yeh-KAHT), a friendly abbreviation used in everyday conversation. You'll hear it in phrases like 'I'm from Yekat' or 'Let's meet in Yekat.' It's especially popular among younger residents and in social media. Using it shows you're familiar with local slang, so feel free to drop it when chatting with locals. **🚋 Tram: The Lifeline** The word 'tramvay' (tram) is ubiquitous in Yekaterinburg, as the city has one of Russia's largest tram networks. Locals often say 'poedem na tramvaye' (let's go by tram) when planning routes. A single ride costs around 35 rubles (as of 2026), and you can pay by contactless card. The tram is not just transport; it's a cultural icon, with vintage trams still running on some lines. **🍽️ Pelmeni: The Local Comfort Food** Pelmeni, dumplings filled with meat, are a staple in Yekaterinburg and across the Urals. Locals often say 'pelmeni' to refer to any dumpling, and you'll find them in cafes like 'Pelmeni Club' on Lenina Avenue. A plate costs about 300-500 rubles. The word comes from the Finno-Ugric languages, meaning 'ear-shaped bread,' reflecting the region's indigenous heritage. **❄️ Sibiryak: The Siberian Connection** Yekaterinburg is often called the 'Gateway to Siberia,' and locals sometimes refer to themselves as 'Sibiryaks' (Siberians) in a proud, hearty sense. The term implies resilience to cold winters, which can drop to -30°C. You might hear 'On nastoyashchiy sibiryak' (He's a real Sibiryak) to praise someone's toughness. It's a badge of honor in this part of Russia. **🏔️ Kamenniy Poyas: The Stone Belt** The Ural Mountains are poetically called 'Kamenniy Poyas' (Stone Belt) in Russian, and Yekaterinburg sits right in the middle. Locals use this phrase to describe the region's natural border between Europe and Asia. You'll see it on souvenirs and hear it in songs. It's a reminder of the city's unique position straddling two continents. **🎭 Shchuka: The Local Nickname** The word 'shchuka' (pike) is a playful nickname for Yekaterinburg, derived from the city's coat of arms featuring a pike and a sable. Locals might say 'Ya iz Shchuki' (I'm from the Pike) as a insider joke. It's not widely known outside the region, so using it can earn you a smile from residents. The symbol dates back to 1783, when the city received its official emblem. **🚇 Metro: The Underground Palace** Yekaterinburg's metro is called 'metropoliten' in Russian, and locals often shorten it to 'metro.' The system has just one line with nine stations, but each station is decorated with marble and chandeliers, earning it the nickname 'underground palaces.' A ride costs 35 rubles, and you can buy tokens at the station. The metro connects key spots like the train station and the city center.
