**🏛️ Explore Historic Center** Start your visit at the Plaza de Armas, the heart of Celaya's historic center, surrounded by the Templo del Carmen and the Palacio Municipal. The plaza is lively in the evenings when families gather and street vendors sell snacks like churros and elotes. Don't miss the Templo de San Francisco, a short walk away, which dates back to the 16th century and houses a revered image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The area is best explored on foot, and you can easily spend a couple of hours wandering the cobblestone streets. **🍮 Indulge in Local Sweets** Celaya is famous for its cajeta, a caramel-like spread made from goat's milk, and you can sample it at the Mercado Municipal or at specialized shops like Dulces La Cabaña. The cajeta here is often sold in small wooden boxes or jars, and you'll find flavors ranging from vanilla to walnut. For a unique experience, visit the Museo de la Cajeta, which explains the history and production process, and offers tastings. Pair your cajeta with a fresh bolillo or spread it on a warm tortilla for a true local treat. **🚴 Cycle the Bicentennial Route** The Bicentennial Route is a 30-kilometer cycling path that winds through Celaya and connects to nearby towns, offering a mix of urban and rural landscapes. Rent a bike from one of the shops near the Plaza de Armas, such as Bicicletas Celaya, for about 100 pesos per day. The route passes by the iconic Arcos de Celaya, a series of aqueduct arches that are especially photogenic at sunset. It's a great way to see the outskirts and get some exercise while enjoying the fresh air. **🎨 Visit Art and Culture** The Museo de Arte de Celaya (MAC) showcases contemporary works by regional artists and hosts temporary exhibitions throughout the year. Admission is free on Sundays, and the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday. Nearby, the Casa de la Cultura offers workshops and performances, from dance to painting, and often has free events in the evenings. Check the local schedule for the Festival Cultural de Celaya in October, which brings music, theater, and art to various venues across the city. **🌳 Relax in Parks** Parque Alameda is a large green space in the city center, perfect for a morning jog or a leisurely stroll among ancient trees. The park has a small lake where you can rent paddle boats on weekends, and there are playgrounds for children. Another favorite is the Jardín Principal, which is smaller but beautifully landscaped and often hosts live music on Sunday evenings. Bring a book or a picnic and enjoy the pleasant weather, which is mild most of the year. **🍽️ Taste Local Cuisine** Celaya's food scene is a mix of traditional Mexican flavors and regional specialties. Try the enchiladas mineras, a local dish with carrots and potatoes, at restaurants like La Casona de Celaya, where a plate costs around 120 pesos. For street food, head to the Mercado Hidalgo, where you can find tacos, gorditas, and fresh aguas frescas for less than 50 pesos. Don't leave without trying a guanábana water or a tejuino, a fermented corn drink that's refreshing on a hot day. **🛍️ Shop at Local Markets** The Mercado Municipal is the largest market in Celaya, selling everything from fresh produce to handicrafts and clothing. It's open daily from early morning until around 6 p.m., and it's a great place to buy souvenirs like woven textiles or pottery. For a more artisanal experience, visit the Mercado de Artesanías on weekends, where local artisans sell handmade jewelry, leather goods, and cajeta. Bargaining is acceptable but always polite, and cash is preferred. **🚌 Getting Around Celaya** Celaya has a reliable bus system that covers most of the city, with fares around 10 pesos. Taxis are also plentiful and affordable, with a typical ride within the center costing 50 to 70 pesos. For day trips, the central bus station offers connections to San Miguel de Allende and Querétaro for under 100 pesos. Renting a car is an option if you plan to explore the surrounding Bajío region, but parking in the center can be tight.
