**🍜 Must-Try Local Dishes** Serang's food scene is built on Banten-style cooking, where coconut milk, palm sugar, and fresh chilies dominate. Start with sate bandeng, a minced milkfish satay grilled in bamboo, sold at Warung Sate Bandeng Hj. Maryam on Jl. Raya Serang-Jakarta KM 5 for around Rp 25,000. Another essential is rabeg, a tangy goat or beef stew with green chili, best sampled at Rabeg H. Nasir on Jl. KH. Abdul Fatah, open daily from 10:00 to 21:00 for about Rp 30,000 per portion. For a snack, try emping melinjo or kerupuk kulit, sold in markets across town. **🍽️ Top Restaurants in Town** For a sit-down meal, head to Rumah Makan Padang Sederhana at Jl. Jenderal Sudirman No. 45, a local favorite for rendang and ayam pop, with meals costing Rp 35,000 to Rp 60,000. Another reliable spot is Restoran New Dunia on Jl. Maulana Yusuf No. 12, serving Chinese-Indonesian seafood like butter prawns and fried gurame from Rp 50,000. Both are open from around 10:00 to 22:00 and fill up quickly on weekends, so arrive before noon or after 19:00. **🛵 Street Food Hotspots** The evening street food scene centers on Alun-Alun Serang, where from 17:00 onward you'll find carts selling sosis bakar, batagor, and pisang aroma for Rp 5,000 to Rp 15,000. Jl. Veteran is another night market strip, known for its grilled chicken and mie ayam stalls that stay open until midnight. For a more organized experience, visit Pasar Rau on weekends, where vendors sell everything from laksa to es doger in a single covered area. **🍢 Best Sate and Grills** Sate maranggi is a Serang staple, and Sate Maranggi Cibungur on Jl. Raya Cibungur is the go-to spot, serving beef and lamb skewers with rice cake and spicy peanut sauce for Rp 30,000 per plate. Another standout is Sate Taichan Bang Jali on Jl. Trip Jamaksari, where grilled chicken satay with sambal is priced from Rp 20,000. Most sate stalls open around 16:00 and close by 23:00, and they often sell out on Friday nights. **🍲 Comfort Food Favorites** When you crave something warm and filling, try Soto Betawi H. Mamat on Jl. KH. Ahmad Dahlan, a humble warung serving beef soup in coconut milk for Rp 25,000, open from 07:00 to 15:00. For noodles, Bakmi Karet Akun on Jl. Jenderal Sudirman offers springy handmade noodles with pork or chicken for Rp 30,000, and it's open until 21:00. Another classic is Nasi Uduk Bu Nani on Jl. Palka, where a plate with fried chicken and sambal costs about Rp 20,000. **🍰 Sweet Treats and Snacks** Serang has a soft spot for traditional sweets, and Kue Cucur Bu Yati at Pasar Lama sells the palm sugar pancakes for Rp 2,000 each, fresh from the wok every morning. For something cold, Es Podeng Pak Haji on Jl. Sunan Kalijaga serves avocado, coconut, and jelly in sweet milk for Rp 15,000, open from 10:00 to 18:00. Modern cafes like Kopi Janji on Jl. Raya Serang also offer cakes and pastries from Rp 25,000, popular with younger crowds in the afternoon. **💰 Prices and Budget Tips** Street food in Serang is very affordable, with most snacks and simple meals costing between Rp 5,000 and Rp 20,000. A full meal at a mid-range restaurant will set you back Rp 40,000 to Rp 80,000, while high-end seafood dinners can reach Rp 150,000 per person. Carry small cash bills, as many warungs and carts don't accept cards or e-wallets, and expect prices to rise slightly during Ramadan and national holidays. **🚌 Getting Around for Food** Most of Serang's best food spots cluster around the city center, so you can walk between Alun-Alun, Jl. Veteran, and Pasar Lama in 15 to 20 minutes. For places farther out like Cibungur or the Jakarta highway warungs, use a Gojek or Grab bike, which costs around Rp 10,000 to Rp 25,000 per trip. Angkot (minivans) also run along Jl. Jenderal Sudirman and Jl. Raya Serang for a flat Rp 5,000, but they stop running after 18:00.
