**🏛️ Historic Old Town Gems** Start your exploration in the Altstadt, where the Marktkirche and the Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus) showcase North German brick Gothic architecture. The Leibniz House, where the philosopher was born in 1646, now serves as a museum with free entry on Fridays. Don't miss the 17th-century Ballhof, a former sports hall that now hosts theater performances. For a quirky photo op, find the statue of the 'Hannover Goat' on the Holzmarkt. **🌳 Royal Gardens and Parks** The Herrenhäuser Gärten are a must-see, with the Great Garden (Großer Garten) offering baroque symmetry and a summer fountain show at 11 am and 3 pm. The Berggarten is home to over 12,000 plant species, including a stunning orchid collection. Entry to the Great Garden costs 8 euros for adults, and a combined ticket for all three gardens is 12 euros. In 2026, the gardens will host special events for the 300th anniversary of the Herrenhausen Palace. **🎨 Art and Museum Scene** The Sprengel Museum houses one of the most important collections of 20th-century art in Germany, with works by Picasso, Nolde, and Klee. Admission is 7 euros, and it's free on Fridays after 4 pm. The Landesmuseum Hannover covers natural history and archaeology, including a fascinating Egyptian mummy. For contemporary art, check out the Kestnergesellschaft, which has rotating exhibitions and a 5-euro entry fee. **🚶 Red Thread Walking Tour** Follow the 4.2-kilometer Red Thread painted on the pavement, which links 36 major sights in the city center. It starts at the Tourist Information office at Ernst-August-Platz and takes about two hours at a leisurely pace. Along the way, you'll pass the Opera House, the Leine Palace, and the Aegidienkirche, a church left in ruins as a war memorial. Pick up a free map at the tourist office or download the app for commentary. **🍺 Local Food and Drink** Try the local specialty, Grünkohl mit Pinkel (kale with smoked sausage), at traditional pubs like the Brauhaus Ernst August, where a hearty plate costs around 15 euros. For a quick bite, head to the Markthalle, a historic market hall with over 30 stalls selling everything from fresh fish to Turkish mezze. In the evening, the Lister Meile area offers a mix of craft beer bars and international restaurants. Don't leave without sampling a Herrenhäuser Pilsner, brewed in the city since 1868. **🎭 Theater and Music Venues** The Hannover State Opera (Staatsoper) is renowned for its productions and offers standing-room tickets for as little as 5 euros. The Schauspielhaus presents contemporary theater, and the NDR Radiophilharmonie performs regularly at the Landesfunkhaus. In summer, open-air concerts take place in the Herrenhäuser Gardens, including jazz and classical performances. Check the monthly program at the Tourist Information for last-minute deals. **🛍️ Shopping and Markets** The main shopping street, Bahnhofstraße, runs from the central station to Kröpcke and features major department stores like Galeria Kaufhof. For independent boutiques, explore the Limmerstraße in Linden, a trendy neighborhood with vintage shops and record stores. The weekly market on the Marktplatz (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 7 am to 2 pm) is perfect for local produce and flowers. On Saturdays, a flea market at the Schützenplatz attracts bargain hunters from 8 am to 4 pm. **🚴 Active and Outdoor Fun** Rent a bike from the Call a Bike stations scattered around the city and cycle along the Leine River to the Maschsee, a 2.4-kilometer-long lake perfect for swimming and paddle boating in summer. The Eilenriede, one of Europe's largest urban forests, offers 650 hectares of trails for jogging and walking. In winter, the Maschsee freezes over and becomes a popular spot for ice skating. For a unique experience, climb the 282 steps of the New Town Hall dome for panoramic views (entry 4 euros, open 10 am to 6 pm).
