**🚡 Ride the Cable Car** The Teleférico de Puerto Plata, located on Calle Manolo Tavárez Justo, is one of the Caribbean's few cable cars and offers sweeping views of the city and coast. A round-trip ticket costs about RD$500 for adults (around $9 USD) and the ride takes roughly 15 minutes each way. Go early in the morning (it opens at 8:30 AM) to beat the crowds and catch the best light for photos. At the top, you can walk to the Christ the Redeemer statue and a small botanical garden. **🏰 Explore San Felipe Fortress** The 16th-century Fortaleza San Felipe, on Avenida General Gregorio Luperón, is the only remaining fort in the city and now houses a small museum. Entry is RD$100 for adults, and it's open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 AM to 5 PM. The ramparts offer a great vantage point over the Atlantic, and you can still see original cannons and a moat. It's a quick visit (about an hour) but worth it for the history and views. **🏖️ Relax at Playa Dorada** Playa Dorada, about 15 minutes east of downtown, is a long stretch of golden sand backed by resorts and palm trees. The water is calm and perfect for swimming, and there are plenty of beach bars and restaurants if you get hungry. A sunbed and umbrella typically cost around RD$300-500 for the day. It's busiest on weekends, so weekdays are quieter. **🍫 Visit a Cacao Farm** The region around Puerto Plata is known for its cacao, and a visit to a local farm like Finca El Quemaíto (about 30 minutes inland) gives you a hands-on look at chocolate making. Tours usually include a walk through the plantation, a tasting, and a demonstration of traditional techniques. Expect to pay around RD$800-1000 per person for a guided tour. It's a great half-day trip and supports local farmers. **🏺 Discover the Amber Museum** The Museo del Ámbar, on Calle Duarte near the central park, showcases the region's famous amber, including pieces with trapped insects and rare blue amber. Admission is RD$100, and it's open Monday to Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM. The museum is housed in a beautiful Victorian building, and the guided tour explains the history and science behind amber. It's a small but fascinating stop. **🚶 Stroll the Malecón** The Malecón, a seaside promenade stretching along the coast, is perfect for a morning walk or sunset stroll. You'll pass by local food stalls, monuments, and the famous statue of Neptune. It's free and open 24 hours, but the safest and most lively times are during the day and early evening. Stop at a roadside cafe for a fresh coconut or a cold drink. **🐒 Meet Monkeys at the Sanctuary** The Monkey Jungle, located about 20 minutes east of Puerto Plata in Sosúa, is a rescue center for squirrel monkeys and capuchins. Entry is $29 for adults and includes a guided interaction with the monkeys, who often climb on visitors. It's open daily from 9 AM to 4 PM. The visit lasts about an hour and is a hit with families. **🍽️ Taste Local Flavors** For authentic Dominican food, head to Cafetería Marisol on Calle Beller, where a hearty plate of rice, beans, and meat costs around RD$250. Another favorite is El Pescador, near the Malecón, known for fresh seafood and fried fish. Lunch is the main meal here, so many local spots close by 6 PM. Don't leave without trying a cold Presidente beer or a fresh fruit juice from a street vendor.
