**🍜 Must-Try Local Dishes** Shashi is famous for its fish-based cuisine, especially the spicy boiled fish head (duojiao yutou) and the delicate fish cake (yugao). Another local favorite is the Shashi duck, often braised with soy sauce and rock sugar until tender. For breakfast, try the beef offal noodles, a hearty bowl that locals swear by. These dishes are widely available at family-run eateries throughout the city. **🏮 Top Restaurants To Visit** For an authentic taste of Shashi duck, head to Lao Jie Fang at 88 Beijing Middle Road, where a half duck costs around 68 yuan. Another standout is Hao Chi Jie, a bustling restaurant at 15 Zhongshan Road, known for its fish head hot pot priced at 98 yuan for two. Both places are open from 11:00 to 21:00 and fill up quickly on weekends, so arrive early or book ahead. **🛵 Best Street Food Stalls** The night market on Shashi Pedestrian Street comes alive after 18:00, offering grilled squid, stinky tofu, and fried rice cakes for 5 to 15 yuan per skewer. Another hotspot is the alley behind Shashi Railway Station, where vendors sell savory pancakes and spicy noodles from 6:00 to 10:00. Cash is still king at many stalls, though some now accept WeChat Pay. Come hungry and bring small bills. **🍚 Where Locals Eat** Skip the tourist traps and head to Gongyuan Road, where tiny shops serve clay pot rice for 12 yuan and free refills of pickled vegetables. The neighborhood around Shashi University is packed with budget eateries, including a popular spot at 22 Xuefu Lane that sells beef noodles for 10 yuan. Lunchtime crowds start around 11:30, so go before noon to snag a seat. These places rarely have English menus, so pointing works fine. **💰 Budget And Prices** Street snacks typically cost between 3 and 10 yuan, while a filling meal at a casual restaurant runs 20 to 40 yuan per person. Mid-range dining for two, including a fish dish and vegetables, usually totals 80 to 120 yuan. Upscale seafood restaurants near the Yangtze River can charge 200 yuan or more for a whole fish. Tipping is not expected anywhere in Shashi. **🚌 Getting Around For Food** Most food streets are within walking distance of the city center, but buses 2, 5, and 8 connect the train station to the pedestrian street for 2 yuan. Taxis start at 6 yuan and are metered, making them a cheap option for hopping between neighborhoods. Ride-hailing apps like Didi work well, though drivers may cancel if you are on a narrow alley. Plan your route around meal times to avoid traffic near schools. **⏰ Best Times To Eat** Breakfast stalls open as early as 6:00 and close by 10:00, so set an alarm if you want fresh soy milk and youtiao. Lunch service runs from 11:00 to 14:00, and many family restaurants close between 14:00 and 17:00 for a break. Dinner starts around 17:30, with night markets peaking between 19:00 and 22:00. Avoid major holidays like National Day, when queues can stretch for an hour. **🍧 Sweet Treats And Drinks** Cool down with a bowl of shaved ice topped with red beans and fruit at Sweet Corner, located at 45 Shashi Avenue, for 8 yuan. Another local favorite is rice wine (mijiu) served warm in winter, available at most dessert stalls for 5 yuan a cup. Bubble tea shops are everywhere, with a large cup costing 10 to 15 yuan. Try the sesame paste dessert at the night market, a rich and nutty finish to any meal.
