Freshwater Mystery?

Question

I stumbled upon the Freshwater spring and 1860s cistern ruins last week, completely by accident. It's tucked away, almost hidden, and the whole place had this eerie, peaceful vibe. The cistern itself is pretty impressive, I mean, to think it's been there since the 1860s! I spent ages just sitting there, trying to imagine what life was like back then. But, the water...it was kinda murky. I saw some birds drinking from it though, which was pretty cool. My question is: Are those birds unaffected by whatever's in that water? Or is there some sort of filtration I'm missing? I should of taken more pics...

Locals have been drinking from that spring for generations and the water gets tested by council every few months, so the birds are fine.

The birds are fine because it's a spring-fed soak, not stagnant water, it flows through constantly so the murk is mostly tannin and silt. I wouldn't drink it myself but dogs swim in it all summer and nobody's grown a second head yet.
