Amtrak vs Metrolink from Anaheim to LA Union Station?

Would Amtrak or Metrolink be better for going from Anaheim to LA Union Station on a Monday morning? Would Amtrak or Metrolink be better for going from Anaheim to LA Union Station on a Monday morning?

The Amtrak ticket will cost you about twice as much as Metrolink, usually around $15 versus $7 or so. If you're not in a rush, Metrolink's OC Line trains are fine and they've got those two-level cars with decent views once you get past the industrial stuff near the river. Just be aware that Monday mornings the 5:45 and 6:15 trains out of Anaheim can get packed with commuters heading to downtown offices.

One thing nobody's mentioned is that Amtrak lets you bring a bike on board for free if you've got one, while Metrolink requires a $4 bike permit you have to buy in advance at a station ticket machine. If you're planning to bike from Union Station to your final destination, that could tip the scales.

Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner has a cafe car which is nice if you want coffee or a snack during the ride, Metrolink doesn't have that. The Amtrak trains also have more luggage space and generally cleaner bathrooms. That said, Metrolink runs more frequently on weekdays, so if you miss an Amtrak you might be waiting an hour for the next one versus 30 minutes for Metrolink.

Metrolink's cheaper, but Amtrak's usually faster and more comfortable. Depends on your priorities.

These vendors typically operate from portable carts or vehicles at public gatherings. Does anyone have information on how to contact such vendors or recommendations for reliable services?

honestly the SGV has a ton of licensed cart operators who mostly do private stuff now. look up "hot dog cart catering San Gabriel Valley" on Yelp and you'll get a handful that are fully permitted, which matters if your venue needs a health permit on file. expect around $400 to $700 for a few hours plus a per person minimum, usually 50 or so. the ones based in Alhambra and Rosemead tend to be cheaper than Pasadena because they're not paying that rent.

fwiw the county health dept keeps a public list of permitted mobile food operators, its searchable by city on the LA County Public Health site. filter for "pushcart" or "MFF" and you'll get vendors cleared for SGV zip codes, which saves you the headache of a venue asking for paperwork later. also worth checking with the Old Town Monrovia or Alhambra farmers market folks, the carts there are usually booked solid but they know who's free and they'll pass along names. just dont wait till the last week, good ones book out 2 to 3 weeks in teh summer.

You could try hitting up the folks who set up outside Home Depot or the DMV in El Monte on weekends, a lot of those carts are owner operated and they'll do private gigs if you ask. Just walk up and grab a card, they usually have one taped to the cart.
