Why don't companies in the SF Valley offer remote/hybrid work?

I've been casually looking for work, and had a some interviews with companies in west LA, the south bay, and pasadena. All of them were at least open to hybrid work. But every company based in the san fernando valley has been in office only, and I have sensed quite a bit of hostility to the idea of remote/hybrid work.

I can't totally make sense of it. Does anyone have any similar experiences or insight?

It's a real thing and I think it comes down to the type of businesses concentrated out there. The Valley has a lot of manufacturing, distribution, and medical device companies that literally can't do remote work for their core staff, so the whole culture just never shifted. You don't see many tech startups or creative agencies in Northridge, it's a different beast. I've noticed the same pattern with companies near the 405 corridor in West LA versus anything off the 101 past the 170.

honestly i think part of it is the commute culture out there. most people in the valley live within 15-20 mins of their office, so employers just assume everyone's fine driving in. west la companies deal with people coming from all over the basin so they're more used to accommodating that. try looking at places near the orange line or metrolink stations if you want to stay in the valley, they tend to be a bit more flexible since they know their staff is commuting from further out

Yeah the Valley is kind of its own world with work culture. A lot of those companies are old school family-run operations that see office presence as loyalty.

These vendors typically operate from portable carts or vehicles at public gatherings. Does anyone have information on how to contact such vendors or recommendations for reliable services?

honestly the SGV has a ton of licensed cart operators who mostly do private stuff now. look up "hot dog cart catering San Gabriel Valley" on Yelp and you'll get a handful that are fully permitted, which matters if your venue needs a health permit on file. expect around $400 to $700 for a few hours plus a per person minimum, usually 50 or so. the ones based in Alhambra and Rosemead tend to be cheaper than Pasadena because they're not paying that rent.

fwiw the county health dept keeps a public list of permitted mobile food operators, its searchable by city on the LA County Public Health site. filter for "pushcart" or "MFF" and you'll get vendors cleared for SGV zip codes, which saves you the headache of a venue asking for paperwork later. also worth checking with the Old Town Monrovia or Alhambra farmers market folks, the carts there are usually booked solid but they know who's free and they'll pass along names. just dont wait till the last week, good ones book out 2 to 3 weeks in teh summer.

You could try hitting up the folks who set up outside Home Depot or the DMV in El Monte on weekends, a lot of those carts are owner operated and they'll do private gigs if you ask. Just walk up and grab a card, they usually have one taped to the cart.
