Why would someone put an unrelated license plate on my car?

Roughly a month ago, my front license plate was stolen. 3-4 weeks later (I'm not 100% sure when), somebody put a license plate on my car (they even screwed it on and everything). I've reported the front license plate as stolen to the police and ordered a replacement already, so I'm not really worried about some consequences of this. But why would someone put on another plate in the first place? I can't be sure if the same person stole and old plate as put the new one on, but it would be weird if it was two different people. I just can't see what benefit someone would get from putting their plate on my car. Any ideas? Is this a common occurrence?

Solid list. I'd add that the al pastor at Leo's is good but the mulitas are where it's at, a quesadilla-taco hybrid with melted cheese between two tortillas for about $4. You can get them at the same truck. For Korean BBQ, if Park's is too packed, walk over to Quarters BBQ on 9th Street, cheaper setups but still charcoal grills and the short rib marinade is just as good.
