Gays of L.A., where have you made friends / "built community?"

West Hollywood and the bars in general to meet people. I'm not much of a drinker, but do enjoy a cold one once in a while, some coffee, hikes, movies, daytrips, going on concerts and checking out random European or Aussie / Kiwi acts, etc. Where have you made friends or met other gay folks for starters?

The Tuesday night movie crowd at the New Beverly is worth a look. It's Tarantino's revival house on Beverly just east of Fairfax, all 35mm, and the regulars there are a mix of film nerds and neighborhood gays who actually show up alone and end up talking in line. Tickets are cash only at the door, around $12, and the midnight stuff gets a real community vibe without any bar pressure.

For the concert thing, you're already on the right track with smaller rooms. Add the Echo and the Teragram to your list, and follow promoters like Spaceland and Goldenvoice on Instagram because that's where the Aussie and UK acts actually get announced. I've met more people just by recognizing the same faces at three shows in a month than I ever did on the apps.

If you want something more structured, look into the LA Gay and Lesbian Center's volunteer shifts or the AIDS/LifeCycle training rides starting in the spring. Both pull a wide age range and a lot of working professionals, and nobody cares that you're not a big drinker.

honestly the gay sports leagues are the cheat code out here. i joined the LA Frontrunners for runs around the Silver Lake reservoir and ended up with a solid group of friends within a couple months, ages range from late 20s to 50s so you wont feel out of place at mid-thirties. there's also Varsity Gay League for kickball and dodgeball if running isnt your thing, and the crowd skews way less bar-centric than WeHo. for the concert stuff check out the Lodge Room in Highland Park and Zebulon in Frogtown, smaller venues where you actually run into the same faces at shows and it turns into something.

Silver Lake and Los Feliz have a decent crowd, coffee shops mostly.

How can I find mobile hot dog vendors for a private event?

These vendors typically operate from portable carts or vehicles at public gatherings. Does anyone have information on how to contact such vendors or recommendations for reliable services?

honestly the SGV has a ton of licensed cart operators who mostly do private stuff now. look up "hot dog cart catering San Gabriel Valley" on Yelp and you'll get a handful that are fully permitted, which matters if your venue needs a health permit on file. expect around $400 to $700 for a few hours plus a per person minimum, usually 50 or so. the ones based in Alhambra and Rosemead tend to be cheaper than Pasadena because they're not paying that rent.

fwiw the county health dept keeps a public list of permitted mobile food operators, its searchable by city on the LA County Public Health site. filter for "pushcart" or "MFF" and you'll get vendors cleared for SGV zip codes, which saves you the headache of a venue asking for paperwork later. also worth checking with the Old Town Monrovia or Alhambra farmers market folks, the carts there are usually booked solid but they know who's free and they'll pass along names. just dont wait till the last week, good ones book out 2 to 3 weeks in teh summer.

You could try hitting up the folks who set up outside Home Depot or the DMV in El Monte on weekends, a lot of those carts are owner operated and they'll do private gigs if you ask. Just walk up and grab a card, they usually have one taped to the cart.
