Lived in Athens for 12 years before moving to the westside. The biggest thing nobody warned me about is how hard it is to find good phyllo dough here. The Greek markets in the valley are decent but you'll pay triple what you would back home. For jobs, it really depends on your field but most people I know ended up in hospitality or healthcare initially while they got their paperwork sorted. If you're set on moving, skip the tourist areas and look at places like West Adams or Koreatown for more reasonable rent while you get established. The Greek community here is smaller than you'd think but there's a solid church in Pasadena that does events.

my buddy moved here from athens about 3 years ago. he says the biggest shock was how spread out everything is compared to greece - you really need a car for everything here. he found a job in tech pretty quick but said the first 6 months were rough getting his credit and rental history sorted. if you're thinking about it, join some of the greek facebook groups for LA, they're pretty active and people are willing to help with the paperwork stuff. also be ready for the cost of living to hit different than what you're used to, especially rent in areas like santa monica or weho

The Greek community in LA is actually pretty tight-knit compared to other cities I've lived in. There's a festival at Saint Sophia Cathedral on Wilshire every September that draws a huge crowd, it's a good way to meet people without feeling like you're networking. For jobs, a lot of Greeks I know ended up in the film industry on the production side, especially if you speak Greek fluently since there's always demand for fixers and translators on location shoots. The weather will feel familiar but the lack of coastline access might surprise you, most beaches are a 45 minute drive from anywhere inland.

These vendors typically operate from portable carts or vehicles at public gatherings. Does anyone have information on how to contact such vendors or recommendations for reliable services?

honestly the SGV has a ton of licensed cart operators who mostly do private stuff now. look up "hot dog cart catering San Gabriel Valley" on Yelp and you'll get a handful that are fully permitted, which matters if your venue needs a health permit on file. expect around $400 to $700 for a few hours plus a per person minimum, usually 50 or so. the ones based in Alhambra and Rosemead tend to be cheaper than Pasadena because they're not paying that rent.

fwiw the county health dept keeps a public list of permitted mobile food operators, its searchable by city on the LA County Public Health site. filter for "pushcart" or "MFF" and you'll get vendors cleared for SGV zip codes, which saves you the headache of a venue asking for paperwork later. also worth checking with the Old Town Monrovia or Alhambra farmers market folks, the carts there are usually booked solid but they know who's free and they'll pass along names. just dont wait till the last week, good ones book out 2 to 3 weeks in teh summer.

You could try hitting up the folks who set up outside Home Depot or the DMV in El Monte on weekends, a lot of those carts are owner operated and they'll do private gigs if you ask. Just walk up and grab a card, they usually have one taped to the cart.
