Planning to eat local, maybe rent a car for a few days, and do some hikes. What should I expect to spend per day for a mid-range trip?

You can trim that budget a bit if you're smart about food. Hit up a Times Supermarket or Foodland for poke bowls and musubi for breakfast or lunch, that'll run you maybe $8 to $12. For dinners, skip the Waikiki tourist traps and walk a few blocks inland to places like Helena's Hawaiian Food or Young's Fish Market, where a full plate is under $15 and tastes way better. If you're hiking, most trailheads like Koko Head or Makapuu are free, just bring your own water and a snack from a local 7-Eleven. Car rental is where it adds up, so I'd only book it for maybe two or three days and use the $3 Bus pass the rest of the time.

honestly $150-200 a day is about right but you can stretch it. Waikiki parking is like $30-40 a day at hotels so if you rent a car for 3 days plan on that extra cost. I'd do the car for the north shore day and maybe koko head hike day, then bus or walk the rest

for food the real move is 7-eleven spam musubi for breakfast ($2.50) and then a plate lunch from like L&L or Zippy's for like $10-12. dinner you can hit up a local okazuya like Fukuya in Moiliili for takeout, $8-10 gets you a box of fried chicken and rice. way better than waikiki pricing

if you're doing hikes bring a reusable bottle cause the tap water's fine here. koko head stairs are free but parking fills up by 7am so get there early or take the bus. diamond head costs $5 to enter but the view's worth it

For a mid-range trip, expect around $150 to $200 per day per person if you're sharing costs. That covers a decent plate lunch from places like Rainbow Drive-In (around $12-15) and a casual dinner in Waikiki (think $20-30 for a main). Rental cars can run $50-70 a day after fees, so I'd only grab one for the days you're hitting spots like Lanikai Pillbox or the North Shore, since parking in town is a pain. If you skip the car and stick to TheBus, you'll save a chunk and still get to most trailheads.
