Hi all,

In the 19th century, New York's five boroughs were five separate political authorities. That changed at the end of the C19, creating a single New York City and paving the way for the modern city, making infrastructure projects like the bridges and the subway possible.

So why in the 21st century is there any argument to continue with the patchwork of conflicting authorities in London? It seems that often problems don't have simple solutions because of this.

Councils to be merged in major local government shake-up https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cn0xz4938z9o . Why is this not (yet) being considered in the capital?

honestly the gLA already struggles with balancing inner vs outer london, making it one big authority would just amplify that. the tube is a good example, zone 6 gets way less investment than zone 1 even under TfL, imagine if there was no borough pushback at all. plus places like Croydon or Bromley have totally different priorities than Hackney, a one size fits all model would prob just lead to more boring identikit high streets everywhere

the thing is london's already massive and a single authority would just make things worse for outer boroughs. they'd get ignored by city hall like happens to some neighborhoods in nyc now. local councils actually know what their patch needs

mate the existing replies already nailed it. you're comparing apples and oranges anyway. new york merged when it was a fraction of its current size and didn't have 32 boroughs with their own centuries of identity. london's already got the GLA for strategic stuff and the boroughs for

It's on the pricey side but not outrageous, and I'd book ahead for weekends since walk-ins get turned away after 7.

yeah booking ahead is the move, especially saturdays. prices are around 25 to 35 for mains so not mad for that stretch of town. i'd aim for a weekday lunch if u want to suss it without the crowds

The weekday lunch call is right, though I'd ring rather than just turn up because they hold tables for reservations. Portions run generous so you can skip starters and keep it nearer 30 a head.

True about after 7, though midweek lunch is dead quiet and the set menu knocks a tenner off.

Weekday evenings might actually be the sweet spot if you want to avoid the weekend surcharge.

booking ahead is smart, the walk-in cutoff is real

Walk-ins after 7 do get turned away but they'll sometimes squeeze you at the bar if a table no-shows.

Book the 12.30 Sunday slot, quieter than evenings.

Agreed on the timing, though the 12.30 slot fills up fast so ring them by Friday.

Sunday lunch there is a different pace entirely, much calmer than a Saturday night. They do a proper roast then and I'd ask for a table away from the door, it gets draughty.
