Brit funk / acid jazz nights?

Do any of you have suggestions for a nicely curated acid jazz or Brit funk party? Looking for something with DJs/music selectors with that type of vibe. I would have loved to catch a set by Gilles Peterson, but I don't think he's playing when I'm there.

Also open to suggestions for any kind of event with good music and/or a good soundsystem ! Thanks !

rye wax is a solid shout but for something a bit different, the vortex in dalston does a jazz club night that sometimes pulls in djs who play the edges of that sound, like broken beat and rare groove. the room is small and the soundsystem is nothing fancy but the crowd is usually proper heads who know their stuff. first week of january is quiet everywhere so you might have to pick one night and commit, but the vortex tends to have something on even during the lull. if you're near hackney, the p grove social club does a sunday session with rotating selectors that can lean into funk, but it's more of a pub vibe than a club

check out the jazz cafe in camden, they have a solid weekly lineup that leans into that sound. the resident djs there usually dig into the rare groove & funk 45s. also the total refreshment centre in tooting does a monthly thing called soul salvation that might scratch that itch, proper soundsystem too.

if you want something more clubby, xoyo in shoreditch sometimes books nights with a psychedelic funk slant. the first week of january is quiet after nye but these spots usually have something on.

If you're up for a bit of a dig, head to dalston and try passing clouds, it's a tiny basement bar that does a monthly thing called "the juice" which is all rare groove, funk and early house. The soundsystem is just a pair of vintage speakers but the vibe is so relaxed and the selectors pull out stuff you won't hear anywhere else. First week of january is dead quiet so it might not be on, but their sister spot the waiting room sometimes has a similar thing on a friday.

Tbh the whole area around kingsland road is good for just wandering into spots, the jago does the odd night that leans into that sound too but you'd have to check their listings. If you're out late, the double happiness in hoxton has a sunday session called "the soul suite" that goes deep into jazz-funk and latin breaks, proper underground feel with a decent pa system. First week is sparse but these weekly residencies usually survive the nye slump

What are some innovative ways to anonymously compare rental prices in a city?

I'm looking for methods or platforms that allow residents to anonymously share and compare rental prices in their area. What options exist for this purpose? SpareRoom's "rooms wanted" ads are underrated for this. people post what they're currently paying alongside what they want next, so you can scrape a rough sense of going rates by postcode without anyone knowing you looked. it skews young and flatshare heavy tho, so not much use if you're after 2-beds in zone 2.

Another one is just the depozit or tenancy deposit scheme data. not public-facing, but your council's housing officer can tell you median rents from deposit registrations if you email them under FOI. takes weeks, but its proper anon and nobody clocks u.

Rightmove and Zoopla only show asking rents, which are often 10 to 15 percent above what a place actually goes for, so they're a poor benchmark. The trick I've used is the ONS Price Index of Private Rents, which breaks things down to borough level and is genuinely anonymous since it's aggregate data, no listing or account needed. For something more granular, the London Renters Union runs a rent reporting tool where you submit what you're paying with your postcode and it maps it against others nearby, though the coverage is patchy outside the inner boroughs.

the openrent "rent check" thing is decent for zones 3-4 where the unions tool barely reaches. also worth checking the london.gov.uk planning portal for new build applications, they list "affordable" and market rent figures per unit in the viability assessments, which is basically the developer telling the council what they expect to charge. bit of a faff to dig through but its public, anonymous & nobody knows ur looking
