Declining the 12.5% "service charge", does the manager always make a visit?

The manager always seems to make an appearance as if to interrogate you of the audacious request to remove it. Does that always happen?

I hate it. This Americanised crap should not be commonplace in England. I am a firm believer of tipping however much you feel if such service warrants one. We pay minimum wages here.

honestly it depends on the place but yeah most managers will come over if you ask to remove it. i've had a few spots in soho just take it off without a fuss though, especially if you're polite about it. the whole thing is annoying but honestly it's not teh same as america where the servers rely on it - here it's just restaurants trying to pad the bill. if you want to avoid the whole dance, stick to places that say "service not included" on the menu, there's a few around covent garden that do that

Is The Crown pub worth a visit in 2026?

fmd_goodThe Crown · #tourism #pint
Stopping by The Crown on a trip next month, is it a decent pub for a pint or just a tourist trap? Any tips on when it's less packed? Stopping by The Crown on a trip next month, is it a decent pub for a pint or just a tourist trap? Any tips on when it's less packed?

Which Crown do you mean, there are dozens in London; the one on Great Portland Street is a solid no-frills boozer, quiet before 5pm on weekdays.

The Crown on Blackfriars Road, different beast entirely.

Great Portland Street one, agree, though it fills up after office hours.
