the old bakery pie is legit, i grab one most saturdays after the market. if you want a proper tip, the spice garden does a thali that's way better value than the a la carte, and they do a takeaway version for £7.50 if you want to eat it in birstall park. the farmers market is good but get there before 10am or the best bread from the little sourdough stall is gone. also, the night market tacos are solid but the queue gets stupid after 7pm, go early
honestly the guide's spot on about the old bakery pie but if you're there on a thursday they do a lamb and mint version that's only available that day, it's £9 and sells out by 2pm. my mate works there and says they only make 20 of them, the beef one is great but the lamb one has this proper flaky pastry that's even better
also the tea room's cakes are fine but the real move for sweet stuff is the polish deli on station road, it's called smak and they do these paczki (doughnuts filled with rose petal jam) on fridays for £1.50 each. they're only there from 9am and gone by lunch, the lady who runs it makes them fresh that morning and they're still warm when you buy them. way better than any overpriced tea room slice imo
ngl the green man gets all the hype but the real hidden gem is the curry house on mill lane, it's called birstall tandoori and it's been there forever. no website, no delivery apps, just a bloke called raj who takes orders by phone and does the best chicken tikka masala i've had outside birmingham. it's £8.50 for a main and the naan is cooked in a proper tandoor, you can see the flames from the street. the guide mentions spice garden which is fine but this is the one locals use for takeaway on a friday night
also the night market's great but if you're there on a tuesday, the pop-up crepe stand near the church is run by a french guy who used to have a place in lyon. he does a salted caramel one with sea salt from brittany, it's £4 and he'll let u have a taste of the caramel first. totally different vibe to the pizza and taco queues

yeah the guide's pretty spot on tbh. one thing i'd add is the birstall market on tuesdays and fridays is actually worth timing your trip for, the veg stall there is way better than supermarket stuff and the guy running it gives u free herbs if u buy a fiver's worth. also if you're at oakwell hall and the weather's decent, grab a coffee from the little kiosk in the courtyard instead of the main cafe, it's cheaper and they do this ginger parkin that's proper good. the canal path someone mentioned behind retail park is a solid shout too, leads to a lock that's got benches and no one bothers u there
if uve got a car theres a cracking little chippy called the golden fry on the main road near the retail park, its cash only and the fish cake is massive for like £1.80, been going there since i was a kid. also st peters church has a little side chapel with some old stained glass that most people miss, its worth poking your head in for five mins even if youre not religious. the guide mentions the market but tbh the friday one is better than tuesday, more stalls and the cheese guy shows up with a proper selection
i'll add that the white hart does a decent carvery on sundays that the guide didn't mention, £11.50 for two meats and all the trimmings, beats the fox & hounds price if you ask me. also if you're walking to oakwell hall from the bus stop cut through the field path instead of the road, it's not signposted but it shaves off like 10 mins, just follow the fence line past the old farm buildings
