We were refused entry to Dubai, no reason given (US citizens).
That's incredibly frustrating. The lack of explanation is the worst part. While Turkish Airlines might have flagged something (though unlikely they'd have the power to outright deny entry), it's more probable the issue was with his passport or something in his background check the UAE immigration authorities performed.
Things like minor past offenses (even things seemingly insignificant in the US) or even just a name that triggers a deeper look because of its similarity to someone on a watchlist could cause this. Did he ever have any visa issues in any country, even minor ones? Was there anything unusual on his passport, like a previous stamp from a country the UAE has tense relations with?
Even seemingly innocuous things can trip up automated systems. The embassy's surprise only reinforces the frustratingly opaque nature of these processes. Unfortunately, short of digging deep into his background and possibly engaging a lawyer specializing in immigration issues, getting a concrete answer might be impossible. I'm truly sorry for the hassle and wasted trip.
the airline doesn't deny entry, they just relay what the UAE advance passenger processing system spits back. Turkish Airlines check in agents see a "no board" code and that's it, they genuinely don't get the reason either. so blaming them is a dead end.
one thing people miss: the UAE runs something called advance passenger info plus a separate security clearance before you even reach the airport. a US passport doesn't get you visa free entry automatically, you get a visa on arrival but that can still be pre screened and refused. if he's got any link to certain nationalities through his name or family, or ever overstayed anywhere in the Gulf even by a day, that flags.
also worth checking if his passport has an Iranian or Israeli stamp, or if he transited through Israel. even a stamp from years ago can trigger it. the embassy in Dubai can't override a security flag, they just tell you to apply for a pre approval next time.
next time have him apply for a visa through the ICP portal before booking anything nonrefundable. costs a bit but you find out before you're standing at the counter.
Dubai/Sharjah Road Scam?
damn u basically did a free taxi run to rak. thing is they usually target cars with a single guy driving & look for dubai plates so u look like u got somewhere to be. best move is roll ur window down like two inches, say u already called the cops for them & keep moving, dont even unlock the door
yeah that's a known one on e311 & the sharjah ring road, usually they wave you down near the adnoc or before the rta cameras claiming wallet got lifted. classic play is they ask for a lift to the next emirate then bail once you slow down, sometimes a second guy on a bike is tracking you. next time just call 999 or drop them at the nearest police point, don't let anyone in your car off the highway ngl
The RAK route is the tell. No one genuinely stranded on the ring road needs to get all the way to Ras Al Khaimah, that's a 90 minute drive. These guys work in pairs and the second car picks them up after they hop out, usually somewhere past the Al Sajaa junction or near the ADNOC on E311. If it happens again, tell them you'll drive them to the nearest police station and watch how fast the story changes.
