How do people with ADHD in the UAE afford their medication?

However, I'm currently comparing health insurance plans (requested quotes from Sukoon, Cigna, and Orient), and all of them have told me that they don't cover ADHD treatment. This is becoming quite expensive for me, as I'm on Adderall. Not many clinics in the UAE prescribe it, and since it's a controlled medicine, I need to attend a monthly consultation, which costs 900 AED each time. On top of that, the medication itself is around 1,000 AED per month (I'm prescribed both extended-release and instant-release doses). I'm curious if others in the UAE with ADHD have faced this issue. Do you also have to pay everything out of pocket? Or are there any health insurance plans that cover ADHD medication? If insurance isn't an option, does anyone know of more cost-effective ways to manage these expenses? For instance: • Is it cheaper to get ADHD medication in Sharjah instead of Dubai? • Are there clinics with more affordable consultations for prescriptions? The main challenge is that I'm prescribed Adderall, which seems to be harder to find here. I'd really appreciate any advice, whether it's about insurance, cheaper clinics, or other tips to make this more manageable. Thanks in advance for your help!

The 900 AED consultation is steep even by Dubai standards. Dr. Hala at the Priory in Al Wasl charges 550 for follow-ups and she's comfortable with Adderall scripts. For the meds themselves, you can try Aster Pharmacy in Al Qusais, they sometimes have it for around 800 AED without the markups the Marina pharmacies add. No insurance will cover it, it's a controlled substance so it's not on any formulary here. A few people I know get their GP to write a 90-day script after they've been stable for six months, which cuts the monthly doctor visit down to every three months.

honestly the monthly 900 aed consultation fee is wild, dr. rauf at the german neuroscience center in dubai healthcare city charges around 600 for a follow-up and they prescribe adderall. for the meds themselves, yeah sharjah is cheaper, life pharmacy on al wahda street has it for about 750 aed for the same script. no insurance covers it here though, it's a controlled substance so it's just not on any plan's formulary. you could try asking your doc for a 3-month prescription if you're stable, saves on the monthly visit fees

That's a rough situation. Have you explored contacting your embassy or consulate? Sometimes they can offer advice on navigating healthcare systems in a new country, or even point to resources specific to expats. Also, exploring different pharmacies might reveal price variations, even within Dubai. It's a long shot, but worth a try.

Dubai/Sharjah Road Scam?

I helped a guy stranded on the ring road, gave him a ride to Ras Al Khaima after he claimed to have lost his wallet. Turns out he was fine, just jumped out and vanished. Did I get played? damn u basically did a free taxi run to rak. thing is they usually target cars with a single guy driving & look for dubai plates so u look like u got somewhere to be. best move is roll ur window down like two inches, say u already called the cops for them & keep moving, dont even unlock the door

yeah that's a known one on e311 & the sharjah ring road, usually they wave you down near the adnoc or before the rta cameras claiming wallet got lifted. classic play is they ask for a lift to the next emirate then bail once you slow down, sometimes a second guy on a bike is tracking you. next time just call 999 or drop them at the nearest police point, don't let anyone in your car off the highway ngl

The RAK route is the tell. No one genuinely stranded on the ring road needs to get all the way to Ras Al Khaimah, that's a 90 minute drive. These guys work in pairs and the second car picks them up after they hop out, usually somewhere past the Al Sajaa junction or near the ADNOC on E311. If it happens again, tell them you'll drive them to the nearest police station and watch how fast the story changes.
