Hey guys,

I've been away at uni for a while and just got back to Dubai for Christmas. I'm looking to catch up on all the new food places that have opened recently. Last year, I heard about One Degree Winter Cafe but never got around to trying it, has anyone been there, and is it worth it?

Also, how do people usually find out about new spots around here? Any recommendations for cool places to check out would be awesome!

Thanks!

honestly One Degree Winter Cafe is fine but it's more about the vibe than the food imo. it's pretty and instagrammy, the drinks are decent but the food menu is kinda limited for what you pay. if you're near JLT there's this spot called Akira Back that opened recently in the DIFC area, not exactly new-new but their tasting menu is solid.

for finding new spots i just follow @dubai.eats and @whatsonindubai on instagram, they're pretty quick with openings. also just walking around City Walk or La Mer usually turns up something. there's a new korean fried chicken place in Al Barsha called Seoul Fried Chicken that's been getting hype, i haven't tried it yet but my friends say it beats the chains easily.

pro tip: most of these places take a month or two before they get their service right, so don't be too annoyed if it's messy at first.

Dubai/Sharjah Road Scam?

I helped a guy stranded on the ring road, gave him a ride to Ras Al Khaima after he claimed to have lost his wallet. Turns out he was fine, just jumped out and vanished. Did I get played? damn u basically did a free taxi run to rak. thing is they usually target cars with a single guy driving & look for dubai plates so u look like u got somewhere to be. best move is roll ur window down like two inches, say u already called the cops for them & keep moving, dont even unlock the door

yeah that's a known one on e311 & the sharjah ring road, usually they wave you down near the adnoc or before the rta cameras claiming wallet got lifted. classic play is they ask for a lift to the next emirate then bail once you slow down, sometimes a second guy on a bike is tracking you. next time just call 999 or drop them at the nearest police point, don't let anyone in your car off the highway ngl

The RAK route is the tell. No one genuinely stranded on the ring road needs to get all the way to Ras Al Khaimah, that's a 90 minute drive. These guys work in pairs and the second car picks them up after they hop out, usually somewhere past the Al Sajaa junction or near the ADNOC on E311. If it happens again, tell them you'll drive them to the nearest police station and watch how fast the story changes.
