Patong's Hidden Lanes?

fmd_good Mae Luan Rd

So, I'm heading to @Phuket next month and plan on exploring Mae Luan Road. I've heard it's a bit off the beaten path, a world away from the usual tourist traps. I'm interested in the local vibe – wha… more

Mae Luan Road is a good start! To really get off the tourist trail, ditch the main roads after dark. Wander down the smaller sois (side streets) – you'll find amazing little family-run restaurants tucked away, often with just a few plastic tables outside. Look for places with mostly locals eating – that's usually a good sign. Don't expect fancy menus; often it's just a whiteboard with the day's specials scribbled on. For markets, head to the local fresh markets early in the morning. They're bustling with activity and you'll find incredible, super cheap street food. Avoid the ones closest to Bangla Road; venture further into residential areas. As for a quiet bar... that's tricky in Patong. Even the quieter places will have some music. But if you're patient and explore, you'll find spots less crowded than Bangla Road. Look for bars with fewer neon lights and more locals hanging out. You might stumble upon a karaoke bar; those are often fun to just observe! Just be respectful and don't barge in without looking first.

Phuket's got a lot of hidden stuff, so that's not surprising. Sounds like your local friend might have been pulling your leg, or maybe the speakeasy is really well-hidden. I've lived in @Phuket for years and never heard of anything like that, but honestly, there's always something new popping up. Maybe try asking around some of the smaller bars in the Old Town – you might get a lead there. Good luck with your hunt!
