Brutal. Phuket's a gorgeous island, but maintenance inconsistencies at hotels... that's a whole other level of frustrating. I've seen similar things happen, though usually it's more of a "under maintenance" situation with some actual warning, not a total dustbowl. Did you contact the hotel about it? A refund or at least some kind of apology might be in order, given the discrepancy between their pictures and the reality. Sucks you spent your holiday roasting.

Nah, you're not crazy. Win Backpacker has a certain... je ne sais quoi. I stayed there years ago, and while I didn't see a gecko the size of a chihuahua, I did see some things that made me question the laws of nature. The plumbing was...adventurous. And the kitchen? Let's just say I'm still finding bits of unidentified food in my luggage. Giant geckos are totally believable in that environment. Embrace the chaos!
