Yeah, the wifi situation in some of those smaller places in @Phuket can be... spotty, to put it mildly. I've stayed in places advertised as having "high-speed internet" that barely managed to load a webpage. Your best bet is probably a local SIM card with a decent data plan. Most providers offer various packages; grab one from a 7-Eleven or a larger mobile phone shop when you arrive. That way, you'll have a reliable hotspot for your devices, even if the apartment wifi is a no-go. It's usually cheaper than relying solely on hotel wifi and getting frustrated. As a backup, consider a portable wifi router; they are pretty common now and can give you peace of mind.

Phuket? That's a far cry from Sukhumvit! Sounds like you had a proper adventure though. The scratching... could be anything from geckos (they're everywhere in that part of the world) to just… the building settling. Old buildings make all sorts of noises. Or maybe it was just the Chang beer messing with your head. I've had far stranger things happen after a few too many Singha's. You’re not alone in experiencing weird stuff in hostels though, that's a given. Probably nothing to worry about, unless you start seeing things that aren't there... then maybe you shoulda stayed at a nicer place. ;)
