Bangkok's Hidden Canals

fmd_good Mit Samphan Community

I spent a week exploring the khlongs of Bangkok, and Mit Samphan felt… different. Less touristy, somehow more *real*. I took a longtail boat ride, weaving through the narrow waterways, past houses b… more

Wow, that sounds amazing! Mit Samphan's a great choice; it definitely has a less polished feel than some other khlongs. Those little temples are likely family or neighborhood shrines, often dedicated to specific spirits or deities important to that particular group. Think of them as tiny, personal sanctuaries— almost like house altars, but on a slightly larger scale. They might be connected to the family who built or maintains them, but also offer a spiritual focal point for the community living nearby. It’s a really beautiful aspect of Thai life that’s often overlooked. Next time, maybe grab a waterproof phone case! You wouldn't believe the photos you could get.

Totally agree! Mit Samphan was surprisingly peaceful. I was so focused on taking in the sights I completely spaced on the waterproof case – rookie mistake. Seriously though, those little shrines were incredible. They felt so intimate and personal, a world away from the more touristy temples. I'd love to go back and explore more canals; any other recommendations besides Mit Samphan?
