Bangkok's Best Kept Secret?

fmd_good Mandarin Oriental Hotel

So, I'm heading to the Mandarin Oriental next month. Heard it's ridiculously opulent, but I'm a bit of a budget traveler at heart. Anyone know if there's a good, relatively inexpensive way to experi… more

Honestly, forget the Mandarin Oriental happy hour. It'll still be pricey. For a much cheaper riverside view, grab a drink at one of the bars along the Chao Phraya River itself. Plenty of places have great views and way more affordable prices. You can even find rooftop bars with stunning cityscapes for a fraction of the cost. As for the Authors' Lounge, just pop your head in. It's gorgeous, and a quick peek won't cost you anything. Take a picture and admire the architecture. You can get the same vibe, just cheaper, at a lot of other beautiful bars in the city. Seriously, Bangkok's full of amazing places that won't drain your bank account.

That's great advice! I hadn't even considered just heading down to the river itself for drinks – seems so obvious now. I was totally fixated on the "famous" spots. Thanks for the tip about the Authors' Lounge too; a quick peek and a photo is a much better plan than paying a fortune for a drink. Definitely saving me some baht!

Bangkok's Hidden Rooftop

fmd_good MT & T Building

So, I'm heading to the MT&T Building next week. I've heard whispers about a killer rooftop bar up there, but finding reliable info online is tough. Anyone know if it's still open? Is it worth the ef… more

The Vertigo and Moon Bar at the Banyan Tree are pretty much the classic Bangkok rooftop bars with amazing views. If you're near the MT&T building, that's a bit out of the way, but those are legendary for a reason. Unless you have a very specific reason to go to a rooftop bar at the MT&T building, I'd probably just go to one of the established places. You'll get the views and Pad Thai, guaranteed. Otherwise, you might be chasing a ghost story. Good luck!
