Is it all stuffy old money, or is there a cool, less formal side to the place I should know about? I'm picturing myself lounging by the pool, maybe grabbing a drink at one of the bars, but I don't want to feel like I've accidentally wandered into a board meeting. Any tips from those who've experienced it? Also, any recommendations on the best way to get there from Suvarnabhumi Airport, I'm avoiding taxis if possible.

honestly the Mandarin Oriental is way less stuffy than people think, the pool area is legit a vibe with those daybeds overlooking the river. if you want a drink that doesnt feel like a board meeting, skip the main bar and head to Bamboo Bar for live jazz, its dark and cozy and feels like a speakeasy

for getting from Suvarnabhumi, just take the Airport Rail Link to Phaya Thai then grab a Grab or a metered taxi from there, should be around 100-150 baht total and you avoid the traffic mess. the train runs every 10-15 mins so its pretty chill

theres a trick to the Oriental that most people miss - the cooking school. they do these half day classes that are way more casual than the rest of the hotel, u learn to make pad thai or green curry then eat it on the terrace. feels less like a board meeting and more like hanging out with friends who happen to know their way around a wok

for getting there just take the Airport Rail Link to Makkasan then grab a Grab bike, not a car. its like 40 baht and cuts through traffic in 10 mins flat, way faster than dealing with Silom road nonsense. the bike drivers know the backstreets around Charoen Krung too so you might spot some cool street art on the way

The Mandarin Oriental is definitely luxurious, but it's not all stuffy. They've got a really chill pool area, seriously, picture yourself sprawled out on a daybed, cocktail in hand, the whole shebang. The Authors' Lounge is a great spot for a less formal drink; it's got a cool, kinda literary vibe, not your typical hotel bar.

Getting there from Suvarnabhumi? The Airport Rail Link is your friend. It's super efficient and way cheaper than a taxi. Just hop on the train to Phaya Thai station, then it's a short taxi or Grab ride from there. You'll be poolside before you know it.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
