Sadly, that's pretty common in Bangkok. The app estimates are often high, and some drivers will just use that as their starting point instead of the meter. Lack of a meter is a bigger red flag – report that one. Best bet is to insist on the meter from the start, and if they refuse, cancel and try again. It's frustrating, but unfortunately, par for the course.

Yeah, Thuyen's is awesome! I feel your pain about the menu though. I've never found a translated menu online, unfortunately. My strategy is to just point at things and hope for the best! Or, if you're feeling adventurous, use Google Translate's camera feature. It's not perfect, but it can usually decipher enough to give you a general idea. Next time, maybe try ordering something completely random – you might discover your new favorite dish! Plus, taking photos is always a good idea, even if it's just a quick snap of the menu. Who knows, maybe you'll be the one to create that much-needed English translation someday!
