Xiatayou's Quiet Mystery?

But, one evening,… I spent a week hiking around the mountains near Xiatayou. The hamlet itself is tiny, just a few houses clinging to the hillside. Everyone was so friendly, offering me tea and smiles. But, one evening, I noticed an old, weathered stone structure half-hidden in the bamboo forest... a small shrine? Temple ruins? I couldn't figure it out. No one seemed to talk about it. It felt almost...forgotten. What's the story behind that secluded structure in Xiatayou?

yeah that's prob not a shrine per se, more like a fude temple. they're all over the mountains around there, tiny little stone huts for the earth god. the one you found might've been abandoned when the trail rerouted a few decades back, or maybe the family that maintained it just moved away. if you go up the old logging path past the last house, there's another one that's still active, old lady leaves oranges out every week.

It's almost certainly a Tudigong shrine, the earth god. They're everywhere in the hills around Taipei, but the older ones get swallowed by bamboo when nobody's left to tend them. The one you saw might be from the Japanese era, those are usually built a bit sturdier with better stonework. If you go back, check if there's a small stone tablet inside or just an empty niche, that'll tell you if it was a proper shrine or something else entirely.

That's intriguing! Xiatayou sounds lovely, but a little mysterious. Taiwanese villages often have structures like that, maybe an abandoned ancestral shrine? Or perhaps a small, forgotten temple dedicated to a local deity, no longer actively worshipped. People in small rural communities can be surprisingly tight-lipped about things, it might be considered bad luck to talk about it, or maybe it's just part of their quiet way of life. You'd probably have better luck finding out more from older residents; sometimes you just need to spend more time there, building relationships, before the stories start to emerge. Good luck with your investigation!

That's a really interesting take! An ancestral shrine or forgotten temple definitely fits the vibe. I hadn't considered the cultural aspect of it being bad luck to discuss, that makes perfect sense, actually. Older residents... hmm, good point. I've only been there a couple of times, mostly just passing through. Guess I need to slow down and actually be there for a while. Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely try that. Maybe I'll even pick up some Mandarin phrases while I'm at it... It's definitely more than just a quiet mystery, it's starting to feel like a proper puzzle!

If you have personal experience with a place that helped alleviate jaw tightness or related headaches, please share: - The name of the establishment - The specific treatment you received - Whether you noticed a significant improvement

For muscle-based jaw tightness, the traditional 推拿 places often do better than the fancy facial spas, and they're cheaper. There's a small 國術館 near Shuanglian I go to for neck and jaw stuff, the guy works the masseter from outside and does traction on the cervical spine, which is where a lot of referred jaw tension actually starts. Around NT$800 for 40 minutes, no booking app, you just walk in. It won't fix a real joint problem but if your issue is muscular clenching it's worth a try.

if its actual tmj stuff and not just cosmetic face massage, go see a dentist who does 咬合板 (occlusal splint) first, the massage places treat the symptom not the joint. dr chen at a clinic off fuxing south road near daan park sorted my clicking in like 3 visits, mostly by adjusting my bite & giving me a night guard. the relief from that lasted way longer than any spa facial i tried

my physio at a small clinic near Liuzhangli MRT did intraoral work on my masseter and pterygoid muscles, basically gloved finger inside the cheek releasing trigger points. weird at first but it fixed the morning headaches within maybe 4 sessions. its not a spa thing at all, its rehab, so book it as a medical visit. 針灸 also helped me, the needles go in the jaw and temple, but the physio did more for the actual tightness.
