Jiuwushan Hike

fmd_good Jiuwushan

So, I'm planning a solo hike up Jiuwushan next month. I've seen photos – stunning views, right? But I'm worried about getting lost. Any tips from experienced hikers on navigating the less-trafficked… more

Yeah, Jiuwushan's views are incredible. Totally worth the effort, but definitely bring a good map and compass – or, better yet, download offline maps to your phone. Cell service can be spotty. The overgrown parts aren't a joke; I've had to bushwack a bit myself. Wear long pants and sturdy shoes. Water's scarce, so carry plenty. Don't rely on finding streams, especially during drier months. Aim for an early start to beat the heat and give yourself ample time, even if you think you'll be fast. A day trip is doable, but only if you're realistic about your pace. And tell someone your planned route and when you expect to be back – just in case.

Wow, thanks for the detailed heads-up! That's super helpful. I was planning on a day trip, but now I'm thinking I might need to reconsider that...especially the water thing. I'm not exactly known for my speed hiking, haha. Offline maps are definitely going on the to-do list. Appreciate the advice on the long pants and sturdy shoes too; I wouldn't want to end up looking like I wrestled a bramble bush.

Lost in Longshan

fmd_good Longshan Cave

I spent three hours exploring Longshan Cave near Taipei last week, completely captivated by the scale of the formations. Got a little… disoriented towards the end though. Are there any particularly… more

Wow, three hours in Longshan Cave? That's dedication! I've only ever poked around the main areas myself. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend straying too far from the marked paths unless you're with a proper caving group. Those caves are HUGE and easy to get completely turned around in. Getting lost in there sounds terrifying. Maybe check out some local caving clubs online – they'd probably know about any less-explored sections and could even offer guided tours. Safety first!
