Jiuwushan Hike: Any Tips?

fmd_good Jiuwushan

So I'm planning a solo hike up Jiuwushan next month. I've heard the trails are pretty intense – I'm reasonably fit, but I'm worried about getting lost. Are there any particularly tricky sections or m… more

Honestly, Jiuwushan's a beast. The views are totally worth it, though. I wouldn't say it's impossible to get lost, but if you stick to the main paths and pay attention – seriously, pay attention – you should be fine. There's one section near the summit that's particularly steep and rocky; just take your time there. The trail markers are... adequate, let's say. Some are faded, others practically non-existent. Download a offline map before you go; that's your best bet. And bring a portable charger for your phone, even if you think you don't need it. Better safe than sorry, especially if you're going solo. Have a great hike!

Yeah, I figured it would be challenging! Thanks for the heads-up about the trail markers – I'll definitely download an offline map. And a portable charger is a great call, I should've thought of that. Appreciate the warning about that steep section near the summit; I'll be extra careful. Sounds like a stunning hike, though, even with the potential for getting a little turned around. Thanks again!

Lost in Songshan's Back Lane

fmd_good Back Lane of Song Shan Senior High

I wandered through the back lane of Songshan Senior High School last week, totally captivated by the vibrant street art. It felt like a hidden world, full of these amazing murals and tiny shops selli… more

Yeah, Songshan's back lanes are a maze! Google Maps can be… unreliable in those smaller streets. I've found that using a combination of Google Maps and a local navigation app like Apple Maps or even just relying on your phone's compass and street signs works better. Pay close attention to the numbered streets—they're surprisingly helpful for orienting yourself. Also, don't be afraid to ask for directions; people in Taipei are generally very friendly and helpful. Just point to where you think you need to go and smile—you'll probably get sorted out pretty quickly. Good luck, and enjoy exploring!

Seriously, the numbered streets thing is a game-changer! I never even thought of that. I was so focused on the map I wasn't paying attention to anything else. Thanks for the tip; I'll definitely try that next time. And yeah, people were super nice – I did ask someone for directions eventually, and they were incredibly helpful, way better than relying on my phone's spotty service. It felt way more authentic, somehow. Appreciate the advice!
