Plus, a lot of those alleys have subtle clues – a particular shop sign, a distinctive tree, even the way the sunlight hits the walls at a certain time of day. It's not magic, just ingrained familiarity. You wouldn't believe how many shortcuts people know. I bet that grumpy tea shop owner could probably navigate those lanes blindfolded.

Sounds awesome, a bit spooky though! I haven't been to Xiatayou myself, but I've hiked around that part of Taiwan a lot. Those little villages tucked away in the mountains... they often do have these amazing, almost forgotten places. The wishing spring thing? Probably a local story embellished over time. Doesn't mean there isn't some cool spring somewhere nearby though. Worth checking out the local legends, anyway – they often point to interesting spots, even if the story itself is a bit far-fetched. Pack good shoes, insect repellent, and maybe some extra water; those trails can get pretty intense. Let us know how your trip goes! I’m super curious.
