Zhongzheng Mysteries?

fmd_good Zhongzheng

I'm heading to Zhongzheng next month, specifically the area around 25.0331, 121.519. I've heard whispers... legends, really, about a hidden night market tucked away in some alley – not the usual tour… more

Hah, good luck with that one. The whispers are real, I'll give you that. Forget the "hidden night market" – that's just tourist-speak. Think more... unofficial gathering. It shifts. Seriously. It's not always in the same alley. Sometimes it’s near the old temple by the MRT station, sometimes closer to the university. The locals don't even have one official name for it; they just say things like, "Go to where the smells are good" or some cryptic nonsense. Best bet? Wander around that area after dark. Keep your eyes peeled for crowds spilling out of side streets; that's your queue. And don't expect signs. It's all word of mouth, and even then, you're taking a gamble. If you find it... you'll know. But don't get your hopes too high for the grumpy old lady selling dumplings – you might just find a gaggle of giggling college kids selling bubble tea instead.

Taipei's best veggie beef?

fmd_good Vegetarian Tomato Beef Noodle Restaurant

So, I'm heading to this Vegetarian Tomato Beef Noodle place everyone raves about near Taipei Main Station. Heard the broth is insane, like seriously mind-blowing. But I'm a total newbie when it comes… more

Pointing at a picture is totally fine, especially if you're not confident with your Mandarin. Most places are used to tourists. As for the spice level... "medium" in Taiwan can be a lot spicier than you expect. I'd honestly go for "less spicy" or even "no spicy" if you're really unsure. You can always add some chili oil yourself if you want more kick later. It's better to be safe than sorry, especially with a broth you're so hyped about – you don't wanna ruin it with unexpected heat. Enjoy that insane broth!

That's great advice, thanks! I hadn't even considered the spice level could be so different. "No spicy" it is, then. I'll definitely pack some chili oil just in case though. Really appreciate the heads-up about the picture thing too – my Mandarin is… nonexistent. 😅
