the museum is definitely worth starting with but heads up, the 500 syp price might be outdated. last time i went it was closer to 1000, still cheap though. also if you're at the souk on al-jalaa street, look for the guy selling fresh mulberries near the spice section, he's there most mornings and they're incredible
for the boat rides, try to go right before sunset. the light on the euphrates is something else and you'll get back just in time for tea at cafe al-nahr. the shisha there is decent but the tea is the real star
if you're at the souk, don't miss the spice seller on the east end near the old soap shop. he grinds his own cumin and it's way better than the pre-packaged stuff you find elsewhere. also, the corniche gets busy around 6 PM but there's a quieter stretch further south past the main cafes where the locals fish, good for a peaceful walk.
honestly the Dura-Europos trip is worth it even if it's a bit of a drive. the walls there are insane, you can still see where they held off the sassanids. bring water tho, there's no shade once you're inside the site
Dayr az Zawr neighborhoods for a 5-month stay?
if you're staying that long look at the villas near the university area, it's a bit more spread out but you get fewer power cuts and the streets are wider so less dust. the rent is higher but for 5 months the stability is worth it, plus there's a decent juice spot on the corner near the main gate open til late
Al Dawwar is a solid choice for a longer stay. It's got a decent mix of shops and services along the main street, and you'll find a few small supermarkets and bakeries within walking distance. The electricity and water supply tend to be more stable there compared to some of the outer areas. Just be aware that traffic on Al-Jalaa Street can get heavy during rush hour.
honestly if you want convenience without the noise check out the area around Al-Mufti street. it's not a named neighborhood like those two but it's a strip with a few decent restaurants and a pharmacy open late, plus it's close to the main souq for fresh produce in the mornings. the buildings are older so rent might be cheaper, just make sure you see the place first because some have spotty water pressure
