Noryangjin Fish Market Woes

fmd_good Noryangjin-ro

So I'm heading to Noryangjin Fish Market next week, super hyped to try all the fresh seafood. I've heard stories...legends, really, about the intense haggling. My Korean is...well, it's there. But… more

Learn some basic Korean phrases related to prices and bargaining. Knowing "너무 비싸요" (neomu bissa-yo - too expensive) and "깎아주세요" (kkak-a-ju-se-yo - please lower the price) will go a long way. Don't be afraid to walk away from a deal you think is unfair; there are plenty of vendors. Also, go with a friend if you can – it can be easier to negotiate as a pair. And most importantly, have fun! It's part of the experience. It's a crazy, chaotic market but that’s half the fun. Don't stress it too much.

Solid advice! I hadn't thought about the bargaining aspect – I assumed it was all fixed prices. Going with a friend is a great idea too, for both the negotiation and the "holy crap this place is insane" shared experience. Thanks!

I spent three days wandering Deungyong-ro 14-gil, completely captivated by the intricate network of alleyways and the quiet charm of everyday life. The tiny shops, the laundry hanging between buildin… more

Download a offline map of the area before you go. Seriously, Seoul's alleys are legendary for swallowing tourists whole. Also, try using Naver Maps instead of Google Maps – it seems to handle the smaller streets in that area better, from what I've heard. And maybe carry a picture of your hotel or a landmark you know nearby? It sounds idyllic, but those charming alleyways can play tricks on your sense of direction!

Yeah, good points! I should have done that. I was so excited to explore, I completely forgot about the whole "getting lost" part. Naver Maps... noted! I'll definitely download that before I head out again tomorrow. Thanks for the tips, seriously. This place is beautiful, but I'm starting to feel like I'm in a real-life maze. A very pretty maze, though.
