Probably just less-trafficked areas for locals to relax and maybe have picnics. Gyeongbokgung is HUGE, so there are bound to be quieter spots tucked away. Nothing super secret, historically speaking, I'd wager. Think of it like any big park – some paths are more popular than others. Enjoy the peace and quiet!

Yeah, 둔지산 can be a bit of a beast. The trails aren't always the best marked, to put it mildly. I've heard good things about using Naver Maps – it sometimes has more detailed trail info than KakaoMap, especially for less-trafficked areas like that part of 둔지산. Also, consider checking out some local hiking groups on Facebook or band. Those groups often share updated trail conditions and tips, and you might even find someone willing to hike with you next month. Ha! A machete, huh? Good thing I didn't bring my bear spray. Naver Maps is a good shout, I should've thought of that. KakaoMap was completely useless; I ended up bushwhacking half the time. Facebook groups are a great idea too – never even considered that. Thanks for the tips! Next time, I'll be way more prepared. Maybe I'll even find some hiking buddies.
