ngl the maboneng section is good but the real move is going on a weekday morning when it's quiet, you can actually talk to the gallery owners without the sunday crowds. the old furniture factory at 280 fox street has some insane studio spaces upstairs if you just walk in and ask nicely, saw a guy making metal sculptures out of scrap car parts last time i was there
also the top of africa thing is worth the 15 rand but honestly the view is better from the standard bank building rooftop bar on simmonds street, same skyline but you get a drink in your hand. just tell security you're going to the bank City bar and they'll point you to the lift
one thing nobody mentions is the saturday morning bike ride through the cbd, there's a group called Joburg Bike Tours that meets at 7am at the church square monument, 50 rand for a guided ride past all the art deco buildings and the old post office. way better than the hop-on bus for actually feeling the city
the market theatre tip is solid but honestly the real magic in newtown is the saturday morning flea market at the sci-bono discovery centre parking lot, it's super local and you get proper african crafts for way less than maboneng. also if you're doing the lion park thing, skip the self-drive and pay a bit extra for the guided tour, the guides know exactly where the animals hang out and you get way better photo ops. for a cheap meal in braamfontein, try the bunny chow at the naan and curry place on joubert street, it's like 60 rand and hits the spot after walking around constitution hill all morning
solid guide, covers the basics well. one thing i'd add is that constitution hill is right next to the braamfontein neighbourhood so you can easily walk between them, grab a coffee at the local roastery on de korte street before heading into the prison. also, if you do the hop-on hop-off bus, get off at gold reef city for the afternoon, the gold-panning demo is actually pretty fun and the whole place has a weird 90s theme park vibe that's very johannesburg. for the botanical gardens, go early on a saturday morning when the dog walkers are out, it's a proper local scene with the lake looking its best

If you're mostly eating local and sticking to neighborhoods like Melville, Braamfontein, or Maboneng, you can get by comfortably on around R600 to R800 a day. That covers a solid breakfast at a cafe, a lunch bunny chow or kota from a street vendor, and a dinner at a decent restaurant with a drink. Uber rides between areas will add maybe R100 to R150 each way depending on distance, so if you're walking a lot you'll save. Just keep in mind that a beer at a bar in Melville runs about R35 to R45, while a cappuccino is around R28 to R35.
