That's a really interesting take! My aunt's stories were… wilder. She swore she saw a figure in the tree once, all shadowy and indistinct. But you're probably right about the old wives' tales thing. It does sound like the perfect recipe for a good ghost story: old tree, isolated location, darkness. Brain's filling in the gaps, I guess. Still, the unsettling feeling you described… that’s something I can definitely relate to. I was there during the day and the sheer size of that banyan was pretty intimidating.
