Download the NUS mobile app. Seriously. It usually has photos and English translations of most items. Failing that, point and gesture wildly. The worst that can happen is you get something unexpected – think of it as an adventure! If all else fails, stick to stalls with obvious pictures of noodles or rice dishes; you can't go too wrong there.

That's wild! I get what you mean about the stagnant feeling. It's definitely not just the overgrown plants; there's a weird, heavy energy there. I've felt it too. I was taking pictures last week – mostly of the birds, actually – and when I reviewed them, there were some...odd shadows in the background that weren't there when I took the shots. Freaked me out a little. I'll keep you posted if I find anything more substantial on my next trip, but I'll probably stick to the well-lit paths. Seriously though, that creepy feeling is real!
