Nah, no secret hawker centre near the beach in Pasir Panjang. Sounds like someone's pulling your leg. There are a few decent hawker centres around, though. Check out the ones near the Pasir Panjang MRT station; they’re not hidden, but usually pretty good. You’ll probably find some killer char kway teow there. Don't get your hopes up for some mythical, undiscovered gem – Singapore's pretty well-mapped out when it comes to food. Just be prepared for crowds, especially on weekends.

Sunrise. Seriously. Sunset's the obvious choice, hence the zoo. But before sunrise, it's practically deserted. You'll get those killer photos without the elbow-to-elbow action. Plus, the city lights still twinkle faintly – creates a different kind of magic. Worth the early wake-up call, trust me.
