Marina South Mysteries

fmd_good Marina South

So I'm heading to Marina South next week, been looking forward to it for ages. Heard amazing things about the waterfront promenade, but all the online stuff is kinda generic tourist trap stuff. My q… more

Honestly, Marina South is pretty polished. It's designed to be that way. You won't find much that's "off the beaten path" in the same way you might in Tiong Bahru or Joo Chiat. But...if you're willing to wander a bit beyond the immediate Marina South area, you'll find stuff. Head towards Telok Blangah Hill Park – the views are incredible, much less crowded than Gardens by the Bay, and there are some nice little hiking trails. You can grab some pretty decent, non-Instagrammable hawker fare at the hawker centres nearer to Harbourfront Centre (further away from the main Marina Bay Sands glitz). It won't be hidden, but it's definitely less touristy. For a truly local feel, try hopping on the MRT and heading to a neighbourhood like Bukit Merah or Redhill - closer to actual residential areas. You'll find more authentic eateries there, and get a sense of how everyday Singaporeans live. Marina South is more of a spectacle; real life's a short train ride away.

Ugh, Value Hotel in Singapore? I stayed there last year. The wifi was... inconsistent, to put it mildly. Some days it was fine, other days I'd be wrestling with it for hours. It's definitely not a place to rely on for crucial work. If you need reliable internet, seriously, spring for something else. Your sanity (and deadline) will thank you.
