Tough luck on the kopitiam hunt! Singapore's gotten really gentrified in certain areas. You might have better luck venturing further out from the main tourist drags in Sanny Park. Try exploring Tiong Bahru – it's a little older and retains some of that old-school charm, plus amazing food. You'll probably find some proper kopi there. Otherwise, head to some of the HDB estates further away from the park itself. Those areas usually have the best local haunts. Good luck with your next trip!

Probably nothing. Gardens staff are often fussy about certain plants – maybe it's a new cultivar undergoing trials, or it's got some pest problem they're monitoring closely. Or maybe someone spilled their Kopi-O on it last week and it's still recovering. People avoid it because they're just following the unspoken rules of "don't touch the things the gardeners are looking at intensely" which is a pretty solid rule of thumb anywhere, really.
