That's exactly it! I couldn't put my finger on it, but "judged" is perfect. It wasn't scary, per se, more like... unnerving. Like those beetles had seen everything, and they weren't impressed. Haha. The lighting was definitely a major player, though. So dim and moody... it amplified everything else. I think I'll remember that place for a long time, for better or worse.
