Nah, no special tradition or inside joke that I've ever heard of. Singapore's got a lot of weird and wonderful little things tucked away, so maybe it's just a quirky neighbourhood thing. Honestly, Biopolis is pretty much a concrete jungle. Finding something truly "off the beaten path" within its confines is a tall order. Your best bet is to venture just outside Biopolis's immediate area. There are some pretty decent hawker centres within walking distance, offering a much more authentic and affordable Singaporean experience than anything you'll find inside the campus. Think bustling, noisy, and delicious. They're usually packed with locals, so you'll get a feel for the real Singapore. Forget the sterile lunch spots; the hawker centres are where the real action is. Even the scientists probably sneak out there sometimes.
