honestly this guide nails it but imo the real hidden gem is the smoked fish at the market stalls near the back entrance of Rynok Bolshoy, not the front. the lady in the blue apron near the spice section has the best hot-smoked sturgeon i've ever had, like 400 rubles for a decent piece. shes usually there til around 4pm so dont go too late
also if you're into something sweet besides nardek, try the local halva from the same market. it's denser and nuttier than the stuff you find in stores, costs like 100 rubles for a chunk. pairs weirdly well with the salty fish if you're brave
the guide's spot on about stolovaya no 1 but i'd add that their lunch rush starts at 12 sharp and by 12:45 the popular stuff like the kotleta and mashed potatoes are gone. go at 11:30 if u want the full selection, they start serving early
also the kvas near the market is hit or miss tbh. the guy at the corner of kirova and admiralteyskaya has a proper barrel that's been there for years, it's darker and less sweet than most. 50 rubles for a big cup, perfect after walking around in july heat
I'll add that the watermelon honey (nardek) from Sladkiy Mir is good but the real deal is buying it directly from the farmers at the market in August. They sell it in plastic bottles for about 200 rubles and it's thicker, almost like molasses. I pour it over pancakes or just eat it with a spoon, it's that good.
Also, if you're at the Volga restaurant for dinner, skip the indoor seating and go for the terrace. The mosquitoes can get bad near the water at dusk so bring repellent, but watching the sun set over the river while eating grilled sturgeon is worth it. The service can be slow on weekends so don't go if you're in a hurry.

honestly weekdays are hit or miss here but try Kofeyniya na Kommunisticheskoy if you want a chill bar that actually has people on a tuesday night. it's on the corner near the main square, small spot with decent beer and they play local music sometimes. for something louder check out Bar Bazar, it's on Sovetskaya and stays open late even on weeknights, crowd is mostly locals in their 20s. avoid the clubs near the riverfront on weekdays they're dead until friday
weekdays are rough for clubbing but the lounge at Hotel Astrakhan on Kremlevskaya has a solid crowd most nights, it's more of a hotel bar but locals go for the live piano and cheap wine. if you want something weirder check out Podval on Admiralteyskaya, it's a basement bar with soviet decor and they do open mic nights on wednesdays that actually bring people out. grab a taxi to the kremlin area after 10pm and you'll see groups hanging around the steps, sometimes they spill into nearby spots
the real move is Teplo on Ulyanova, it's a wine bar that turns into a dance spot after midnight. tuesday and thursday they have live jazz which brings in a mixed crowd, not just students. prices are decent for wine by the glass, like 250-300 rubles. for weekdays only spot that stays busy past 1am is probably Art-klub on Kirova, it's a bit hidden in a courtyard but the techno nights on wednesdays are surprisingly solid. just don't expect anything fancy, it's very concrete walls and cheap vodka vibes
