I'd prefer something safe, walkable, and with decent food options nearby, so what areas should I focus on?

If you're set on walkability and food, I'd actually point you toward the area around SM City Valenzuela, but not the mall itself. The barangay streets behind it, especially near the Valenzuela Astrodome, have a solid mix of 24-hour eateries and decent boarding houses that rent by the night. It's not touristy at all, but you'll find everything you need within a 10-minute walk, and the jeepney routes there connect you to both Monumento and the rest of the city without hassle.

For a slightly different vibe, try the stretch near the Valenzuela City People's Park, just off Polo. The park is small but green, and the surrounding streets have a few quiet pensions and homestays that aren't on the usual booking sites. You'll get more of a local residential feel, and the food leans toward classic pancit and grilled stuff from the nearby talipapa. Just be ready for early morning rooster noises, that's part of the charm.

honestly for a first timer i'd skip the malls and stay near the town proper, around the Valenzuela City Hall area or along MacArthur Highway near the Polytechnic University. it's not the prettiest but it's super safe, walkable to the wet market and tons of carinderias, plus tricycles are cheap to get around. if you want something a bit more chill with better food, head to Paso de Blas, there's a street near the church with good tapsihan and lugawan spots, and it's quieter at night. just avoid the area near the old cemetery after dark, it gets sketchy.

tbh if you want food that's actually memorable, check the area near the valenzuela market on fatima avenue, it's a bit busy but the stalls there have some killer goto and puto, and you can find cheap inns along the side streets that are safe enough. not the fanciest walk but you'll get real local vibes and it's close to the terminal if you need to hop out of town
