Is that a normal thing there or a known scam? I'm visiting in 2026 and don't want to get burned.

Deposits for group tables, normal-ish. Wire transfers only, sketchy.

yeah the wire transfer part is what would stop me. most group bookings i've seen in manila take gcash or card, or just hold the table with a card number. cash deposit in person is normal, sending money to a stranger before you've even seen the place isn't

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

The sketchy part is nobody can vouch for the place. I'd ask for a name and address first.

wire only is a red flag tbh, gcash or bank transfer to a real business name is what i'd expect & a landline or fb page that checks out

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

fb pages are easy to fake too, check if the page has old posts and tagged photos from real customers. landline is the harder one to fake, so ask for that first.

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

GCash names get spoofed too, check the receipt

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

agreed, though even gcash can be faked if the name doesn't match the eatery, so ask for a receipt with the business name

arrow_drop_up 0 arrow_drop_down

Right, a deposit itself isn't the problem. What I'd want is a named bank account matching the registered business, since GCash numbers get recycled and anyone can print a QR. Ask for the DTI registration name too.

true, a real resto would take a card hold or cash on the day. asking for a bank transfer to a personal account before u even see the place is the weird part. i'd just walk away tbh
