the swat museum tip is solid but honestly the real gem is the small room upstairs they don't always advertise with the gandhara coins and jewelry. went last spring and had the whole place to myself for like an hour, the caretaker let me linger past closing time
if u have a free morning skip fizagat and drive 20 mins past malam jabba to the shangla top viewpoint instead. the road gets a bit rough after the resort but the valley opens up completely and u can see all the way to the indus in clear weather. way fewer people too
for food the serena is fine but the dhaba on mingora road opposite the gulf station does a better chapli kebab for half the price. it's the one with the blue plastic chairs outside, no sign in english. get there by 1pm or they run out
honestly the swat museum is great but the white palace is way more interesting if you catch the caretaker in a good mood, he showed us the old servant quarters and the underground tunnel system last time. the gardens are overgrown but thats part of the charm, feels like a forgotten world. just bring mosquito spray, the orchard gets buggy after noon
theres a spot locals call the green tunnel about 15 mins past butkara on the old shahi road. basically a stretch of walnut trees that arch over the whole track and it's completely quiet except for the river below. i went there during monsoon and the light filtering through was unreal, feels like a secret corridor. just watch out for the slippery rocks if it rained recently

one thing that gets overlooked is the fruit chaat near the main bus stand, the guy sets up around 4pm and charges PKR 80 for a bowl with seasonal fruit and chaat masala, perfect snack before heading to fiza ghat. also if you're doing the swat museum, grab a chai from the little stall right outside instead of inside, it's PKR 20 vs PKR 50 and tastes better. the morning bazaar tip about tomatoes is wild, i need to try that timing next time
the morning bazaar tip is solid, i'd add that if u go around 8am instead of 6am the prices drop even more cause vendors wanna clear stock before it gets hot. got a whole kilo of tomatoes for PKR 40 last week, insane deal. also the swat museum is worth the PKR 30 but honestly the real gem is the small photography exhibit upstairs, most ppl miss it. one thing the guide doesnt mention is that the shared rickshaws stop running after maghrib prayer, so if ur out late near fiza ghat expect to pay double for a private one back
honestly the best budget move is skipping the main bazaar for dinner and walking 5 mins to the small lane behind the PTDC Motel. there's this one dhaba run by an old guy who does a mean mutton karahi for like PKR 400, way better than the thali places and still cheap. also if you're going to white palace, go early morning around 7am before the crowds and the entry guy might just wave you in for free, happened to me twice now
